Wow, this half term is flying by!!![]()
We have enjoyed so much autumnal fun, taken autumn’s walks to find our treasures, woodland animals with our own badger set and explored farming and harvest. 🍂🚜🥔🥕![]()
We will be finishing on the 24th for half term but we still have lots of fun, play and learning to squeeze in first.
If your child was born between 1 September 2021 and 31 August 2022, they are due to start school in a reception class in September 2026 – and you can apply for their place at your chosen school from today! ![]()
But how do you choose the right school for your child? Here’s what you can do to help to inform your choice:![]()
⭐ Visit schools you may be considering – most schools will have open days this term which you can attend to look around, speak to staff, and start to get a feel for whether this school might be the right fit for your child and your family.![]()
⭐ Talk to other parents with children who attend the school about their experiences of it. This may be people you already know, or you may find them through local parents group, online or in the community. ![]()
⭐ Read the school’s most recent Ofsted report – but focus on the details which are most important to you rather than the overall judgement. ![]()
⭐ Remember, you are not your child. Keep things which are important to them at the centre of your decision making. Are they more of a ‘go with the flow’ kind of child or do they prefer routine and order? You might love the idea of lots of outdoor learning.. but would your little one?![]()
You can apply to more than one primary school, and you should! Putting only one school on your application will not guarantee that your child is offered a place there. If you only apply to one school and they are not able to offer a place to your child, they will be offered a place at any nearby school with space. However, if you have also applied to a 2nd and 3rd choice school, it is very likely that your child will be offered a place there if your 1st choice is not available.![]()

Perhaps you have a little one who has just started at an early years setting, childminder or school and you have noticed that after a busy day they are struggling with their emotions at pick up times. ![]()
This is called restraint collapse and is perfectly normal as they are learning to deal with all the new experiences they have had during the day. It shows that you are their safe place – that they feel they can figure everything out with you.![]()
Take a moment to think about all the new things they have had to learn, the times they have had to cope with new feelings and emotions, to share resources and adult attention – it’s no wonder that all these feelings that have been kept inside can spill out once they are with you.![]()
To try to help give them the time and space they need, greet them with enthusiasm and rather than questioning them about what they have been up to, encourage them to share their day by talking about what you have been doing. ![]()
Perhaps they need some quiet time or a run in the park – you know your little one best.![]()
Listen and empathise with them, acknowledging and naming their feelings. Remember that as a parent/carer we can give them the time, space and love they need.
First full week back and we are set up for a week of story telling.👧🐻🐻🐻![]()
